Privacy policy

Classical Conversations UK&I Limited (referred to as “CC UK&I”, “we”, “us”, “our”) is the Data Controller. We know that privacy is invaluable and are committed to keeping any Personal Information you entrust us with in a manner that will protect, not compromise, your privacy. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, and disclose your Personal Information when you visit or make a purchase from classicalconversationsbooks.co.uk (referred to as the “Site”).

If at any time you wish to query how we might be handling your data or to request an update or deletion of your data, please contact us at janine.bell@classicalconversations.com.

What Personal Information do we collect and why?

When you visit the Site, we collect certain information about your device, your interaction with the Site, and information necessary to process your purchases. We may also collect additional information if you contact us for customer support. In this Privacy Policy, we refer to any information that can uniquely identify an individual (including the information below) as “Personal Information”. See the list below for more information about what Personal Information we currently collect and process and why.

Most of the Personal Information we process is provided to us directly by you, and is divided into Device information, Order information, Payment information and Customer Support information. The following detail the types of information and the reasons for their collection:

Device information

We may collect device information such as the version of web browser, IP address, time zone, cookie information, what sites or products you view, search terms, and how you interact with the Site. This information allows us to load the Site accurately for you, and to perform analytics on Site usage to optimise our Site. The information is collected automatically when you access our Site using cookies, log files, web beacons, tags, or pixels. This information may be shared with our data processors, who act on our behalf to help fulfil our services to you. For more information about how we share your data, please see the “Sharing Personal Data” section.

Order information

To fulfil orders that you place with us, we may collect pertinent information, such as your name, billing address, delivery address, email address, and phone number. We collect this information to provide products or services to you to fulfil our contract, arrange for delivery and provide you with invoices and/or order confirmations, communicate with you, screen our orders for potential risk or fraud, and, when in line with the preferences you have shared with us, provide you with information or advertising relating to our products or services.

Payment information

We take the security of your payments very seriously. That’s why we only use payment gateways that are fully encrypted through the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS). PCI-DSS is a joint effort of brands like American Express, Discover, JCB International, MasterCard and Visa Inc. to increase the security of payments. For more information about PCI-DSS, please visit www.pcisecuritystandards.org.

When you take a basket to the checkout, you are directed to a secure page managed by Shopify. Look for the padlock icon in the search bar at the top of the page to confirm the security of the checkout page. You then have the choice to pay with an express method, or through a direct payment gateway. Depending on your choice, the payment will be handled by either the express payment provider or our direct payment provider, Shopify, who will collect and process your Cardholder Data in their supply of the Payments Services to you. In so doing, Shopify may transmit or possess your Cardholder Data outside of your jurisdiction, and may disclose such information as required by applicable law. CC UK&I does not store your credit card information on our systems, except for the last four digits of your card number to use as a reference in case of a payment or refund query. For further information, you might want to visit Shopify’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Customer Support information

If you require assistance from our customer support, you recognise that we will collect the information provided by you to us so that we can assist you with your problem or query. This may include a phone number, email address, name, or physical address, depending on the method by which you choose to contact us by. This information will be kept confidential and shall only be shared to third-parties if we require their services to provide the necessary support to you.

What about Minors?

The Site is not intended for individuals under the age of 18. If you are the parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with Personal Information, please contact us at janine.bell@classicalconversations.com to request deletion.

How do we share your Personal Information and why?

We only share your Personal Information in a way that helps us to serve you well. To serve you well and fulfil our contracts with you, we share your Personal Information with service providers. An example of a service provider is Shopify, whom we use to power our online store. You can read more about how Shopify uses your Personal Information here: www.shopify.com/legal/privacy. Other third-party service providers include AMP, Easyship and relevant delivery companies, Klaviyo, Swym Corporation, and Yotpo. We may share your Personal Information to comply with applicable laws and regulations, to respond to a subpoena, search warrant or other lawful request for information we receive, or to otherwise protect our rights.

Cookies

The length of time that a cookie remains on your computer or mobile device depends on whether it is a “persistent” or “session” cookie. Session cookies last until you stop browsing and persistent cookies last until they expire or are deleted. Most of the cookies we use are persistent and will expire between 30 minutes and two years from the date they are downloaded to your device.

You can control and manage cookies in various ways. Please keep in mind that removing or blocking cookies can negatively impact your user experience and parts of our website may no longer be fully accessible.

If you are unhappy with our use of cookies, then you can choose whether or not to accept cookies through your browser controls, often found in your browser’s “Tools” or “Preferences” menu. For more information on how to modify your browser settings or how to block, manage or filter cookies can be found in your browser’s help file or through such sites as www.allaboutcookies.org.

Additionally, please note that blocking cookies may not completely prevent how we share information with third parties such as Google Analytics. To exercise your rights or opt-out of certain uses of your information by these parties, please follow the instructions in the ‘Google Analytics’ section below.

Google Analytics

We know, Google Analytics sounds scary. Actually, though, it is not as intrusive as it sounds. Google Analytics simply helps us understand how our customers use the Site by installing a cookie on your browser that records information such as which pages you visit, how long you spend on the pages, and the general area you are in. Don’t worry, none of this information is linked in any way to you; instead, it is aggregated into general statistics and anonymised. Not even Google actually know who you are or collect information attached to you in any way. This general information is really helpful to us (and particularly our technology developer) as it allows us to understand what users like (and don’t like) about the Site so that we can make it better for you. Without this information, updates we make to the Site would be wild guesses, making it much harder to provide meaningful, relevant content that serves you and saves you time and energy.

You can read more about how Google uses your Personal Information here: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. If this still sounds too scary, you can also opt-out of Google Analytics by installing their browser extension here: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. Our developer will get over it!

For further information about how targeted advertising works, you can visit the Network Advertising Initiative’s (“NAI”) educational page at www.networkadvertising.org/understanding-online-advertising/how-does-it-work.

Do Not Track

Please note that because there is no consistent industry understanding of how to respond to “Do Not Track” signals, we do not alter our data collection and usage practices when we detect such a signal from your browser. This is not out of a desire to ignore your request, but because our system is unsure how to react, and therefore behaves as normal.

How do we use your Personal Information?

We use your personal Information to provide our services to you, which include offering products for sale, processing payments, delivering and fulfilling your order, and keeping you up to date on new products, services, and offers.

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”), the lawful bases we rely on for processing this information are:

  1. We have a contractual obligation.
  2. We have a contractual obligation when you make a purchase with us. We then need certain information from you as described in the ‘Order information’ and ‘Payment information’ sections to fulfil our part of the contract. For example, we would greatly struggle to deliver products to you if you decided not to provide us with a delivery address.

  3. We have a legitimate interest.
  4. We have a legitimate interest when the collection of your Personal Information furthers our company purpose of providing parents with goods and services to educate themselves and their children classically. To help us fulfil our purpose, we use your data in the ways outlined in the ‘What Personal Information do we collect and why?’ section. We believe that this provides mutual benefit as it provides us with the information needed to improve our Site and services which make your experience all the better.

How do we store your Personal Information?

Your information is securely stored with Shopify or, in some cases, on a secure, password-protected storage device.

We keep a record of Personal Information, such as email addresses, and phone numbers for a maximum period of six years of non-engagement, after which period we will then dispose of your information by deleting the information from Shopify, and erasing the file(s) from the storage device. Any further records of information will be securely destroyed.

What are my data protection rights?

Under data protection law, you have rights including:

Your right of access - You have the right to ask us for copies of your personal information.

Your right to rectification - You have the right to ask us to rectify personal information you think is inaccurate. You also have the right to ask us to complete information you think is incomplete.

Your right to object to processing - You have the the right to object to the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances.

Your right to data portability - You have the right to ask that we transfer the personal information you gave us to another organisation, or to you, in certain circumstances.

You are not required to pay any charge for exercising your rights. If you make a request, we have one month to respond to you.

Please contact us at janine.bell@classicalconversations.com if you wish to make a request.

Please note that any of your Personal Information that Shopify use will be initially processed in Ireland and then will be transferred outside of Europe for storage and further processing, including to Canada and the United States. For more information on how data transfers comply with the GDPR, see Shopify’s GDPR Whitepaper: help.shopify.com/en/manual/your-account/privacy/GDPR.
