Music is not only something to be heard, but also something to be read. When written down, music is a language with a mathematical structure and unique symbolism. Through music notation, composers are able to pass a song along to musicians that they may never meet. Math in Motion introduces students to the symbols and structures, to both the math and the names, that enable one to read the language of music.

From the basics of pitch, rhythm, and meter to the final goal of chord analysis in an actual song, Math in Motion contains a wealth of principles for an introduction to music theory and notation that will extend far beyond the single semester in which it is studied. Structured according to the rhythms of the Challenge III seminar, each chapter contains instruction in music theory followed by four days of practicing what was learned in the chapter.
